Say cheese

Tomorrow, Saturday, bishops and their spouses will dress in their Sunday best for their offical Lambeth photograph. The spouses will get their turn first at 11 a.m.; the spouses, at 2 p.m. Canon Jim Rosenthal, director of communications for the Anglican Communion office, reminded the spouses about the photo session (rain or shine), saying that only the spouses of primates, "I repeat, only the spouses of primates," will get to sit in front row. He recalled that the at the last Lambeth Conference, one spouse insisted on being in front because, "I'm a bishop's wife." He had to gently remind her that, "well, lady, so are the more than 650 others who are behind you."

Playing catch up

Anecdotes I've not been able to share: ****** We bumped into the bishop of Colombo, Duleep de Chickera, just as he emerged from a workout at the University of Kent's sports centre the other day.  If you recall, Bishop Duleep,  whose church enjoys good relations with the Anglican Church of Canada, delivered the opening service sermon at Canterbury Cathedral last July 20. He did so at the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. We asked how long it took him to come up with his sermon --there was no written text, by the way. He said, "Oh, I went through about four or five drafts before I said, this is it." ******** * The Walk to Witness was a bit of a challenge for bishops' spouses who were told the day before that there would be no chance to change into a new pair of shoes or fresh set of clothes after the ...

Apologies

Apologies for not being able to write more than I had originally planned. Between running here and there to venues so far apart from each other, travelling to and from the university (no accommodations available on campus), taking photographs and seeking out interviewees, our days typically end at 2 a.m. Not a great time, I discover, for introspection of any kind. But I have been making some mental notes (and sure hope that I can remember them later) because there are little stories here and there to share. For instance, I have yet to seek out the parents of the youngest Lambeth "delegate" -- all of six months from the diocese of Sudan. I still need to verify the exact spelling of the name and the gender of the child. But a steward by the name of Margaret (we just happened to chat while waiting for bishops to arrive at the Cathedral) said stewards ...

Help!

I'm posting an initial set of photos taken during the Opening Service at Canterbury Cathedral. Patience is requested if some have no identifying captions -- it's not easy to get the names of all 657 bishops, plus their spouses. They also have a habit of hiding their purple lanyards. If you know any, please, please help me identify them. Even Lambeth staff and officials are having a hard time figuring out who is who -- check out the photo gallery of the Lambeth 2008 Web site. No names, man.

Lambeth bunnies

I haven't had time just yet to inquire about the group of bunnies that have been hopping about the open green spaces of the University of Kent. They are quite a sight as they nibble on the grass and occasionally hop in circles (performing a liturgical dance?).  Lambeth cartoonist-in-residence Dave Walker http://www.cartoonchurch.com/blog/ has a theory: they have been released on campus "for the amusement of bishops."
